"It is remarkable how closely the history of the Apple-tree is connected with that of man. The geologist tells us that the order of the Rosaceae, which includes the Apple, also the true Grasses, and the Labiatae, or Mints, were introduced only a short time previous to the appearance of man on the globe. It appears that apples made a part of the food of that unknown primitive people whose traces have lately been found at the bottom of the Swiss lakes, supposed to be older than the foundation of Rome, so old that they had no metallic implements. An entire black and shrivelled Crab-Apple has been recovered from their stores."

In my small town library, before library cards had been replaced by computers, their card for "The Annotated Walden" compiled by Phillip Van Doren Stern, had only two names on it, one I can't remember, the other was mine and it was on all the lines but one. So I admit I am biased. Walden made me what I am. Good or bad.All said, this little volume is a jewel. Both the essay, which is among Thoreau's best and this slim, elegant edition of it. It's a short read, but it's full of the philosophy that Thoreau practiced throughout his brief life. And what subject as simple as the apple, its history, its occurrence throughout folklore and mythology as observed and studied through the eyes of a botanist and reported in the lines of a poet. But as in all of his writing there is always something composting beneath and if you don't mind digging a little, something might open up another door in your mind.
Small enough to throw in a backpack or fine enough to lie on a coffee table but filled with the juice of a wild apple orchard. A treat for an admirer of Thoreau or a nice introduction for someone whose way of thinking and living might be changing in the future.

It is completely about apples. Appreciation of them and comments on how best to eat them and how apples should be handled. It was ok if you like reading about nature but not facinating.
Thoreau seems as relevant today as when the story was written. While the title is "Wild Apples" and the text describes Thoreau's love of and experience with the various wild apple trees he "discovered" the story could be about tenaciousness, flexibility and resolve; making something worthwhile from poor circumstances and despite expectations and appearances.
Thoreau really liked eating wild apples! This collection of essays on different aspects of the apple gives a good feel for life at the time without getting bogged down in dialogue or scenery from a long work of fiction. His depth of passion for wild apples makes me want to go find some of my own.
I must admit that I wouldn't have read a book about the lore of apples in the 1800s had it not been rather short in length and written by the amazing Henry Thoreau. But as it was, it contained the unmatched descriptions and fervent passion that is so evident in all of Thoreau's writings. I wouldn't recommend this work to anybody that isn't a follower of Thoreau, but for those of us that are, this writing about apples is a quick easy read that inspires you to take a stroll outside with an apple in your hand.
This book might not be for everyone. It was the first of Thoreau that I have read, and might seem a bit "plodding" to some readers. However, I find his exploration of wild apples, their origin, and how they spread across the country to be quite interesting. Also, his appraisal of the flavors of wild apples compared with our cultivated species reminded me that what we find in our groceries is often just not the same as the flavors of plants from the wild or from our own gardens. And enjoyable read for a winter's evening.
What's not to like about an apple?
Thoreau explains that the apple was the
foundation of Rome. This fruit symbolizes
peace as does the olive in an olive branch.
This perfect fruit was mentioned by Homer
and Herodotus. Pliny calls apples by the
name urbaniores. This wonderful fruit first
surfaces the beginning of August and begins
to fade toward the end of November as the
winter quickly approaches.
Thoreau's book is a treasure chest of pertinent
information about the apple and its literary
and historical significance.
