Dario Navarro is a twenty-four-year-old man who has taken care of his ill mother his entire life. When his mother’s illness gets to be too much and he has to put her in a nursing home, rediscovering himself turns out to be harder than it seems. All he wants is someone to rely on, who has his back. He’d thought maybe Webb could be that person, but Webb’s issues with their age difference stand in the way.

The book is the 9th of the series “Demon Elite”.Webb is keeping an eye on Dario and his mother whom, after her accident, is losing her sanity. She often becomes violent. She is unpredictable. The job Webb has wouldn’t be a problem if not for Dario. Dario is way younger than Webb, and it seems that the young man doesn’t waste any opportunity to tease the older one.
Webb is self-conscious about the age gap between the two. Every “move” of Dario’s, is counterattacked by Webb gestures like hair ruffling or calling him kid. These actions are deliberate, Webb is trying to protect himself. He’s also concerned of what Dario’s brother, Creed, would say if he would make a move on his “way” younger brother. Then one evening, Webb has enough of teasing, and he kisses the boy. That makes him panicky, and he leaves the house. Later that evening when Dario is calling him, he thinks the boy wants to talk about what happened, so he ignores the call. But this time Dario really needs him…
Dario for his entire life knew that he can count only on his brother Creed. When he’s calling Webb to ask for help with his mother, who attacked him with a knife, he comes to realize that even if he would like too, he can’t count on Webb.
From that moment on, his behavior toward Webb is changed completely. He stops teasing the man, he accepts not asking or waiting for any help from the older man. He’s also tired of the fact that, for Webb, their age difference is an issue. Dario knows he’s not a kid anymore and he knows what he wants, and he wants Webb.
When the opportunity comes to catch their enemy, he volunteers as bait. That makes Webb lose his cool as does his brother Creed. But they all know that he, Dario, is the perfect subject for this task.
Even though finishing the book didn’t take too much time, I enjoyed the angst.
